INTRODUCTION

It is a divine order that good is rewarded with good. Thus one needs to think that; besides Allah I whose unlimited favours are beyond repayable; the being that has benefitted man the most is none other than the messenger of Allah, Muhammad �.

In this day, when neither have we the ability to see, nor converse with the prophet �, we have forgotten his favours upon us, nor can we comprehend them. One must remember; that truth, if ignored or forgotten, still remains the truth.

The prophet � was sinless, and had the guarantee of Allah’s Ieternal and infinite love, yet still, not for his own further advancement but for our’s, did he spend night after night, day after day, begging Allah Ifor our salvation. The physical torture hurled at him by the opposition for propagating Islam, the psychological anguish suffered by him when seeing his beloved followers persecuted and the mental torment undertaken by him in his unending concern for his people; all bear testimony to the debt that we owe to this selfless man �.

In praise of his accomplishments and his perfected character, Allah I states;

Allah sends His Salaat (Graces, Honors, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad �) and also His angels (ask Allah to bless and forgive him).

O you who believe! Send your Salaat on (ask Allah to bless) him (Muhammad �) and send Salaam (greetings and invocations of peace)

Al Ahzab 56

A couplet in the Arabic language is true in it’s explanation;

I have not, in praising Muhammad �, with my words, brought praise to him. But I have with my praising of Muhammad �, brought praise to my words.

And the translation of a couplet is true in it’s understanding.

You may be singing the praise of Muhammad �, But on what you are doing have you paid much thought? Where are you to the praise of he who is praised by Allah I? This, if not audacity, what else can it be?

Saying this, one should bear in mind that Allah I has not only permitted the sending of salutations upon the prophet �, but has ordained reward in lieu of it. The most significant of which are; for every salutation recited, Allah Irewards the reciter with ten rewards, and the prophet’s �intercession will be afforded to those who send abundant salaah and salaam.

This is Allah’s I sheer blessing upon us, as we are thanking Allah’s messenger �for what he has done for us, and we are being rewarded for thanking him. In light of the phenomenal rewards available for the recitation of Salaah and Salaam one should endeavour to make it part of one’s routine daily not just for one’s journey of ziyarah.

40 SALAAH AND SALAAM

BISMIL-L�HIR-RA�M�NIR-RA��M SAL�MUN `AL� `IB�DIHIL-LADH�NAS-�AF� SAL�MUN `ALAL MURSAL�N.

In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficent Peace be upon the servants who He has chosen. Peace be upon the Messengers.

O Allah! Lord of this standing call (Adhan) and of this benefitting prayer (Salaah). Send salutations upon Muhammad and be pleased with me in such a way that You will never again be displeased with me.

O Allah! Send salutations upon Muhammad the Prophet, and his wives the mothers of the believers, and children,

and those of his household in the manner that You sent salutation upon the family of Ibrahim. You are the Praiseworthy, the Majesty.

O Allah! Send salutations upon Muhammad, the untaught Prophet, and the family of Muhammad, in the manner that You sent salutations upon Ibrahim And send blessings upon Muhammad, the untaught Prophet, in the manner that You sent blessings upon Ibrahim. You are the Praiseworthy, the Majesty.

ALL�HUMMA SALLI `AL� MU�AMMADIN `ABDIKA WA RAS�LIKAN-NABIYYIL UMMIYYI WA `AL� ’�LI MU�AMMAD. ALL�HUMMA SALLI `AL� MU�AMMADIW-WA `AL� ’�LI MU�AMMADIN SAL�TAN TAK�NU LAKA RI�AW-WA LAH� JAZ�’AW-WA LI�AQQIH� AD�’�. WA A`-�IHIL WAS�LATA WAL FA��LATA WAL MAQ�MAL MA�M�DAL-LADH� WA`ADTAH� WAJZIH� `ANN� M� HUWA ’AHLUH� WAJZIH� AF�ALA M� J�ZAYTA NABIYYAN `AN QAWMIH� WA RAS�LAN `AN UMMATIH. WA SALLI `AL� JAM�`I IKHW�NIH� MINAN NABIYY�NA WAS-S�LI��NA Y� AR�AMAR-R��IM�N.

O Allah! Send salutations upon Muhammad, (who is) Your servant and Messenger, the untaught Prophet, and the family of Muhammad. O Allah! Send salutations upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, such salutations that are for You pleasing and for him recompense, and a fulfilment of his rights. Grant him ‘Wasilah’ (intercession and also a unique place in Jannah), elevated status and that praised status/place

that You have promised him.

And grant him on our behalf what he is deserving of. Grant him better than what You have given to any Prophet on behalf of his tribe, and to any Messenger on behalf of his people. (O Allah!) Send salutations upon all his brothers from amongst the Prophets and the pious, O most merciful of all those who can show mercy.

And send blessings upon Muhammad, the untaught Prophet, in the manner that You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. You are the Praiseworthy, the Majesty.

`AL� ’AHLI BAYTIH� KAM� SALLAYTA `AL� IBR�HIMA INNAKA �AM�DUM MAJ�D. ALL�HUMMA SALLI `ALAYN� MA`AHUM. ALL�HUMMA B�RIK `AL� MU�AMMADIW WA `AL� ’AHLI BAYTIH� KAM� B�RAKTA `AL� IBR�H�M. INNAKA �AM�DUM MAJ�D. ALL�HUMMA B�RIK `ALAYN� MA`AHUM. SALAW�TUL-L�HI WA SALAW�TUL MU’MIN�NA `AL� MU�AMMADI-NIN-NABIYYIL UMMIYYI.

O Allah! Send salutations upon Muhammad and those of his household in the manner that You sent salutation upon Ibrahim. You are the Praiseworthy, the Majesty. O Allah! Send salutation upon us with them. O Allah! Send blessings upon Muhammad and those of his household in the manner that You sent blessings upon Ibrahim. You are the Praiseworthy, the Majesty. O Allah! Send blessings upon us with them. May Allah’s salutation and the salutation of the believers be upon Muhammad the untaught Prophet.

ALL�HUM-MAJ-`AL SALAW�TIKA WA RA�MATAKA WA BARAK�TIKA `AL� MU�AMMADIW-WA `AL� ’�LI MU�AMMADIN KAM� JA`ALTAH� `AL� ’�LI IBR�H�M. INNAKA �AM�DUM MAJ�D. WA B�RIK `AL� MU�AMMADIW-WA `AL� ’�LI MU�AMMADIN KAM� B�RAKTA `AL� IBR�H�M. WA `AL� ’�LI IBR�H�M INNAKA �AM�DUM MAJ�D.

O Allah send Your salutations, Your mercy and Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, in the manner that You sent salutations upon the family of Ibrahim. You are the Praiseworthy, the Majesty. And send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, in the manner that You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. You are the Praiseworthy, the Majesty.

WA SALLAL-L�HU `ALAN-NABIYYIL UMMIYYI.

Allah send salutations upon the untaught Prophet.

AT-TA�IYY�TU LILL�HI WAS-SALAW�TU WA�-�AYYIB�T. AS-SAL�MU `ALAYKA AYYUHAN-NABIYYU WA RA�MATUL-L�HI WA BARAK�TUH. AS-SAL�MU `ALAYN� WA `AL� `IB�DIL-L�HIS-S�LI��N. ASH-HADU ALL� IL�HA ILLAL-L�HU WA ASH-HADU ANNA MU�AMMADAN `ABDUH� WA RAS�LUH.

For Allah are all greetings, salutations and good. Peace be upon you, O Messenger; and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s pious servants.

I bear witness that there are none worthy of worship but Allah. And I bear witness that Muhammad is his servant and Messenger.

AT-TA�IYY�TU�-�AYYIB�TUS-SALAW�TU LILL�H. AS-SAL�MU `ALAYKA AYYUHAN-NABIYYU WA RA�MATUL-L�HI WA BARAK�TUH. AS-SAL�MU `ALAYN� WA `AL� `IB�DIL-L�HIS-S�LI��N. ASH-HADU ALL� IL�HA ILLAL-L�HU WA ASH-HADU ANNA MU�AMMADAN `ABDUH� WA RAS�LUH.

For Allah are all greetings, good and salutations. Peace be upon you, O Messenger; and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s pious servants. I bear witness that there are

none worthy of worship but Allah. And I bear witness that Muhammad is his servant and Messenger.
